JPA Tutorial - JPA Query Intro Example

The simplest JP QL query selects all the instances of a single entity type.

Consider the following query:

SELECT e
FROM Employee e

JP QL uses SQL syntax where possible.

SQL query selects from a table. JP QL selects from an entity from the application domain model.

Syntax

The overall form of a select query is as follows:

SELECT <select_expression>
FROM <from_clause>
[WHERE <conditional_expression>]
[ORDER BY <order_by_clause>]

Example

The following code is from PersonDaoImpl.java.

package com.java2s.common;

import java.util.List;

import javax.persistence.EntityManager;
import javax.persistence.PersistenceContext;

import org.springframework.transaction.annotation.Transactional;

@Transactional
public class PersonDaoImpl {
  public void test(){
    prepareData();
    List<Professor> l = em.createQuery("SELECT e FROM Professor e").getResultList();
    for(Professor p:l){
      System.out.println(p);
    }
  }

  private void prepareData(){
    Professor p = new Professor();
    p.setId(0);
    p.setName("TOM");

    em.persist(p);
  }
  @PersistenceContext
  private EntityManager em;
}
